This saving is in the vote for Contingencies.
3 Interpreters at $1,920 and 1 at $960 have been employed in lieu of 2 at $2,400, 2 at $1,920,
and I at $960.
The Office of Accountant of Police Rate has been abolished, the 3rd Clerk and 3rd Shroff have
also been reduced."
The decrease arises from the omission in the Crown Agent's account of the Stationery for 1869.
It will appear in the account of 1870 as corresponding increase. The vote for Contingencies has not been expended.
No provision was made in the Estimate for the Salary of the Assistant Engineer at one guinea per day, or for the Overseer of Stone Masous at Pokefulum, or for the Watchman at the Peak. The closing of the Mint has led to decreased expenditure, but nevertheless the Colony was called upon for one year's pay to the Master after arrival in England, and for payments for Assays made in 1860-67 and 1808.
A clerk was appointed to the Yokohama Post Office at $720 per annum after preparation of the
Estimate.
This small excess is for Contingencies.
This excess is caused by the maintenance of the "Blanche" and "Victoria," which should more properly have been charged to "Special Expenses" where due provision was made. The vote for Contingencies has not been expendeti,
The duties of Clerk of the Supreme Court, and Clerk of Summary Court have been discharged by 1 Officer at $1,920 per annuin in lieu of 2 at $1,440 per annum. There has also been
a saving in Contingencies owing to the non-purchase of Books.
This is caused by a decrease in Contingencies,
Nothing has been paid for Contingencies.
Do.
do.
This decrease is in Salaries and Contingencies,-The 2nd Assistant Master having only arrived
towards the middle of the year,
The Colonial Surgeon having priv-te Practice has drawn C100 less than the Salary provided in
the Civil List.
The Dispenser's Salary has been increased by $280 per annum.
The posts of 3rd and 4th Chinese Interpreters were vacant during the whole year.
The Force is below the number authorized in the Estimate, and moreover a stoppage of $2.50 per month was claimed from each of the Sikh Constable for rations which are charged under Police, exclusive of Establishments.
It has not been considered necessary to appoint an Assistant Superintendent.
The cost and transport of the 2 Steam Fire Engines and Accoutrements to Firemen, amounting
to $11,057, were not included in the Estimate.
